United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Canada, Germany, Australia are on the top of the list.
Canada, New Zealand and Australia can be considered in this category.
- CANADA: The country has introduced several immigration programs through the Canadian government, for the benefit of people looking to immigrate. These include a family sponsorship program, a skilled workers program, an immigrant investors program, a refugee program, and an Atlantic immigration pilot program, among other programs. The Canadian Government has also recently introduced favorable immigration policies that bring several benefits to Indian students who have graduated from a Canadian University offering permanent residency to highly skilled students. The country works on a points-based system. They allot points for each criterion like work experience, education, and age. A lot of importance is given to one’s educational and language skills and the experience one garners from employing those skills in her/his profession. The country has often been rated as one of the best countries to live in, however, one requires to have a diploma or bachelor’s degree to apply for the immigration process.
- NEW ZEALAND: To live in New Zealand permanently, one would require a Resident Visa. There are a number of pathways to obtaining a resident visa, many of which start with a temporary visa allowing you to work, study, or own a business in New Zealand. Some visas, such as those granted under the Skilled Migrant Category, grant you residence right away. You need to comply with any conditions attached to your visa, to ensure your pathway to a residence is not interrupted. Before moving to New Zealand permanently, aspirants need to consider what visas you’re eligible for and whether those visas will enable you to stay in New Zealand permanently in the long run. You also need to make sure you are ready to move to New Zealand because you will need enough time to complete the requirements of your temporary or resident visa conditions.
- AUSTRALIA: Australia too follows a points-based system and is regarded as the land of job opportunities. The government allocates points for each criterion such as work experience, age, and education. The maximum age of an applicant can be 49 years and the minimum educational qualification is having a diploma or bachelor’s degree. International students are required to have a minimum of two years of academic study in Australia, to be eligible for a post-study work visa in Australia. Aspirants can opt for a Bachelors’, Master’s, or Doctoral degree to qualify the same. The subject area of the field of study does not affect the student’s eligibility for a post-study visa in Australia.
English is the world’s most widely spoken language but is unusual in the fact that the vast majority of speakers are not ‘native’. Of the approximately 1.5 billion people who speak English, less than 400 million use it as a first language. That means over 1 billion speak it as a secondary language.

There are competitive examinations for:
- Copy preparers/ proofreaders/ production editors

- CELPs for each function and language combination (e.g. Spanish interpreters or Arabic translators, editors and verbatim reporters) are held approximately every three years, according to recruitment needs. The application process begins several months before the examination date, and the application period is just a few weeks.
Note: CELPs are open to candidates who have more than one nationality. However, the United Nations will not recognize more than one nationality for administrative purposes.
The six official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

LCEs are both function- and language-specific.
Also note: UN Local examinations: General Service Examinations (GSE) and Language Proficiency Examination (LPE)
CELTA from Cambridge is a qualification for teaching English as a foreign language. It is the most widely recognized English teaching qualification in the world and the most often requested by employers.
Note: CELTA is a specific brand of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification that is awarded by the University of Cambridge’s non-profit assessment organization, Cambridge English Assessment.
Who is CELTA for?
- First-language English speakers and non-first-language speakers.
- New teachers with no experience starting their career.
- Teachers with some experience who want to develop their skills.
- Teachers who want to travel and teach English.
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It describes language ability on a six-point scale.
Scale/Levels:
- Basic: A1 (Pre) > A1 > A2
- Independent: B1 > B2
- Proficient: C1 > C2
Now let’s understand these levels (i.e. CEFR or CEF Proficiency Levels) with few more details –
1. Pre A1 Starter (YLE Starter): It is the start of a child’s language learning journey. (YL = Young Learners)
2. A1 Movers (YLE Movers): It is the next step in a child’s English language learning.
3. A2 Flyers (YLE Flyers): It is the third of language fun, activity-based English tests for children.
4. A2 Key: It is an exam for school-age learners which will help prepare them for higher-level English language qualifications.
5. B1 Preliminary for Schools (PET for Schools): A B1 Preliminary for Schools qualification shows that a student has mastered the basics of English and now has practical language skills for everyday use.
6. B2 First (FCE): It is Cambridge most popular exam, accepted by thousands of businesses and educational institutions worldwide. A B2 First qualification proves you have the language skills to live and work independently in an English-speaking country or study on courses taught in English.
7. C1 Advanced (CAE): It is the in-depth, high-level qualification that shows you have the language skills that employers and universities are looking for. More than 9,000 educational institutions, businesses and government departments around the world accept C1 Advanced as proof of high-level achievement in learning English.
8. C2 Proficiency (CPE): It is our highest-level qualification – proof that you are a highly competent speaker of English. A C2 Proficiency qualification shows the world that you have mastered English to an exceptional level. It proves you can communicate with the fluency and sophistication of a highly competent English speaker.
9. B1 Business Preliminary (BEC Preliminary): It helps you to get the practical language skills you need to start doing business in English. With a B1 Business Preliminary qualification, you show employers that you have a good knowledge of English for practical, everyday use in business.
10. B2 Business Vantage (BEC Vantage): It shows employers that you’re ready to do business at an international level. This exam could help you when applying for new jobs, getting a promotion, or developing your career.
11. C1 Business Higher (BEC Higher): It helps you to get the practical language skills you need to work effectively at a senior level in international business. You show employers that you have achieved an advanced level of Business English.
NOTE:
- Most popular ones are – B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency.
- UCELA (University of Cambridge English Language Assessment) e.g. UCELA B2 First means – B2 First level test is done from Cambridge.
ESL:
ESL is an acronym that stands for English as a Second Language. It usually refers to English language instruction for non-native English students that occurs in countries where English is the dominant or official language. Student-immigrants or foreign exchange students are examples of ESL students.
EFL:
EFL is an acronym that stands for English as a Foreign Language. While confusingly similar to “ESL”, this term is usually used when referring to English language education in countries where English is not the official language (most of the world). Students in this situation often speak their native language in their daily life.
TEFL:
The *TEFL acronym stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (used to refer to teaching English abroad). A “TEFL certification” refers to the training courses and certificate that are commonly required by language schools and institutes around the globe seeking to hire English teachers. TEFL is an industry acronym.
TESOL:
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
In North America, “TESOL” is more typically used when referring to teaching English to non-native speakers in native English-speaking countries such as the U.S. Hence, if you want to earn a Master’s degree for teaching English as a second language in your local public school system that degree will likely be in TESOL.
It is common for British, Canadian and Australian training centers to issue a certificate in TESOL as that is also used for domestic teaching and regulated by their governments. The U.S. does not have any domestic regulation for teaching English in private language schools and therefore most U.S. and European training would use the term TEFL for teaching abroad.
TESL:
Teaching English as a Second Language. A TESL certificate usually refers to people who plan to teach non-native English speakers living in a native-English-speaking country. In other words, you’d seek a TESL qualification if your primary interest is to teach in a country where English is the first language, such as the United States, Canada, The United Kingdom, or Australia.
However, if your primary interest is in traveling and teaching English overseas, then you should seek a TEFL certification.
CELTA:
Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. is a specific brand of TEFL certification that is awarded by the University of Cambridge’s non-profit assessment organization, Cambridge English Assessment.
DELTA:
Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults. Similar to CELTA, DELTA is another certification brand awarded by the University of Cambridge’s non-profit assessment organization, Cambridge English Assessment.
A DELTA qualification is restrictive in the sense that it is only offered to qualified teachers who already have at least one year of teaching experience. Therefore, DELTA should be only be considered as an option for experienced teachers who are seeking more credentials from Cambridge English Assessment, specifically. While it may look good on your resume or CV, you absolutely do not need a DELTA to teach English overseas.

ALTE organizes courses and conferences on aspects of language assessment, and operates a quality auditing system of European language examinations.
OET (Occupational English Test) is designed to meet the specific English language needs of the healthcare sector. It assesses the language proficiency of healthcare professionals who wish to practice in an English-speaking environment. All four language skills are assessed, with Writing and speaking tests available in 12 different areas of healthcare. All candidates sit the same Reading and Listening tests.
OET is accepted as proof of English proficiency in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Namibia and Singapore for registration in 12 healthcare professions.
OET is owned by Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust (CBLA). It is a venture between Cambridge English and Box Hill Institute.
These Cambridge exams are not as common globally as the TOEFL or IELTS, however they are often required for admission to UK universities. The Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) is best suited to someone who is already confident in their English communication.
As the name implies, it is an advanced test accepted as proof of C1 level English (equivalent to a score of 7-8 on the IELTS or 110-120 on the TOEFL).
The Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English is most advanced of these four exams (TOEFL, IELTS, CAE and CPE). Like the CAE, this exam is often used in UK university admissions.
It tests knowledge of English at the C2 level (equivalent to a score of 8.5-9 on the IELTS and above the maximum score of the TOEFL).
The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) too, is one of the world’s leading computer-based English language tests trusted by universities, colleges and governments around the world.
PTE scores are required as part of the university admission process in Canada in most of the colleges/universities (For Canada Student’s Visa).
Test of English for International Communication is an exam aimed at both students and executives. It can be required as part of a student’s academic journey (e.g. to apply for a Master’s degree) or by an employer, for recruitment purposes or as part of the career of a future employee. While the TOEFL assesses academic English, the TOEIC evaluates professional English.
The TOEIC exam lasts 2 hours. It only tests candidates’ listening and reading skills. This is the main reason why the TOEIC is somewhat considered easier than the TOEFL. The final mark (between 5 and 990) evaluates whether a candidate is able to understand an English workplace environment. Unlike the TOEFL, the TOEIC exercises only address workplace themes. No technical prerequisites are demanded.

A Student must be older than 14 and should have any device like, laptop, desktop, tablet, or mobile phone with a good network connection.
Each level gets completed in a different “duration and number of classes” depending on the learners‘ level and skill set. Our counsellors guide the students accordingly at the time of follow-up counselling sessions.
The Proficiency Standards for each level are as follows:
- A1 Level (Beginner)
- A2 Level (Intermediate)
- B1 Level (Threshold)
- B2 Level (Advanced)
- C1 Level (Proficient)
If any student misses the class due to some indispensable reason and provides prior notice of his/her absence, then he/she will get the recording of the class.
There are a total of six levels in the French language, from A1 to C2, where A1 is the beginner level and C2 is the most advanced level.
Awarded by the French Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Centre International d’études pédagogiques (CIEP), DELF and DALF are the two most prestigious French proficiency tests for non-native speakers. Each year, over 300,000 students enrol to take the various DELF/DALF exams throughout the world.
There are six levels of DELF and DALF –
- DELF A1: Breakthrough or beginner
- DELF A2: Way stage or elementary
- DELF B1: Threshold or intermediate
- DELF B2: Vantage or upper-intermediate
- DALF C1: Effective Operational Proficiency or Advanced
- DALF C2: Mastery or proficiency (near-native)
- The DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) and DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are composed of 6 independent diplomas that correspond to the levels of the CEFRL. Thus, you can register for the test of your choice, as per your proficiency level.
At each level, the exam evaluates four skills (LSWR): Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading.
Each section carries 25 marks. Therefore, to earn a diploma, you need a minimum score of 15/25 per module and an aggregate of 50/100.
You can take the DELF/DALF exam at one of the 900 approved test centers in 154 countries.
In India, the Alliance Française network conducts these exams in New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Trivandrum, Coimbatore, Goa, Pondicherry, etc.
DELF and DALF Diplomas have lifelong validity.
It means you don’t have to re-sit the test after a while to prove your fluency.
There are SIX different tests (within the DELF category).
1. DELF Prim (ages 8-11)
DELF Prim is designed for children in primary school, between 7 and 12 years old.
School-going young learners who are beginners in French as a Foreign Language can register to one of the three independent levels, namely A1.1, A1, and A2.
2. DELF Junior (ages 13 to 18)
DELF Junior is a specially adapted version for juniors and teenagers of the DELF diplomas.
The test structure is similar to that of the DELF for adults, but topics focus more on school-going students aged 13 and above.
The levels evaluated are A1 to B2.
3. DELF Pro
It is the professional version of the DELF.
The DELF pro’s purpose is to assess working professionals’ communication skills and students who play a vital role in a French-speaking atmosphere.
DELF Pro has four levels — A1, A2, B1, and B2.
4. DELF Scolaire
Like DELF Junior, DELF Scolaire is also for adolescents who are non-native French speakers.
Like all variations of DELF and DALF, it is also recognized globally and is valid for life.
5. DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française)
DELF is for every French enthusiast above 17 years old, and all four DELF diplomas correspond with a CEFR from A1 to B2.
The DELF test comprises four sections: Oral comprehension, Writing, Speaking, and Reading comprehension.
The candidates can choose the level that they think is closest to their level of skill.
The diploma is the same for DELF Junior and DELF Tout Public. As a matter of fact, the word “Junior” does not appear on the certification.
Therefore, it is impossible to differentiate between the two diplomas.
6. DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française)
The DALF C1 and C2 are referred to as advanced or proficient. Since C2 is the highest level of the CEFR, DALF C2 is the highest French diploma as a foreign language.
Both are entirely identical. The only difference is the administration.
For instance, if there is an agreement between the French embassy and local educational institutions, you have to take DELF for schools (DELF Scolaire).
On the other hand, if there is no such understanding, you have to consider DELF Junior.
The only difference between DELF and DALF is level.
The DELF is directed towards A1 to B2, whereas the DALF is meant for C1 to C2, the two highest French proficiency test levels.
TEF stands for Test d’Evaluation de Français.
Unlike DELF and DALF, TEF is the single test where your score will determine the points awarded for French language proficiency.
Started in 1998 by the Paris Ile-de-France CCI, TEF is helpful for several things, including work permits in Canada and France.
The TEF (Test d’Evaluation de Français) exam measures four French abilities: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
All the varieties of the TEF test is valid for only two years.
There are five different types of French TEF examinations.
(i) TEF Études
Started in 2004 by the French Ministry of National Education, TEF Études (TEF for studies in France) tests your spoken and written French.
It is for international students who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree course at any French University.
The exam comprises four necessary tests: Written comprehension, Oral comprehension, Written expression, and vocabulary and syntax.
(ii) TEF Naturalisation
If you want to become a French citizen, you can select TEF Naturalisation.
The French Ministry of the Interior recognizes this test for any foreigner who hopes to apply for immigration to France.
The test has four sections – written comprehension, oral comprehension, oral expression, and written expression. Difficulty-wise, it is equivalent to B1.
(iii) TEF Carte de résident
The TEF Carte de résident (Resident Card) is a French proficiency test to verify A2 level oral and written proficiency.
It is useful if you desire to obtain a resident card from the French government.
The test structure is similar to that of TEF Naturalisation. If you have already passed DELF A2, you don’t need this one.
(iv) TEF Canada
Do you want to settle in Canada?
Well, then TEF Canada is the exam you need to pass and get additional points.
You need to get CLB 7 or above to get this bonus point, which is more or less comparable to DELF B2.
The TEF Canada test ascertains the French skills of people who fall within the economic immigration program, especially for Canadian citizenship.
While you can take the exam in many countries, the number of seats and centers is limited.
Thus, interested candidates should register in advance.
(v) TEF Québec – TEFAQ
TEFAQ or Test d’Evaluation du Français adapté pour le Québec is another test for people who need proof of French knowledge specifically for Quebec Immigration.
The Quebec region of Canada does not use TEF Canada to examine French skills for immigration.
Thus, you have to consider the TEF Québec test. However, only two modules are mandatory: Expression Orale and Compréhension Orale.
It stands for Test de Connaissance du Français. TCF is another French language placement test for non-native speakers of French.
As a French language proficiency test, TCF functions in the same way as TEF for those who seek emigration to Canada or France.
It is administered by the Centre international d’études pédagogiques (CIEP) on behalf of the French Ministry of Education.
Like TEF, it also has five kinds of tests.
(i) TCF
It is a single test that consists of questions in order of increasing language difficulty. It ranges from level A1 to level C2.
TCF is useful for all purposes (personal, academic, or professional).
There are three mandatory (Listening, Proficiency in language structures, and Reading) and two optional examinations (speaking and writing).
(ii) TCF DAP
Do you want to pursue a bachelor’s programme in France?
Well, in that case, you can take TCF pour la Demande D’Admission Préalable (DAP).
It is needed for admission in the first-year undergraduate (L1) or architecture school student provided that you don’t have DELF B2 or DALF diploma.
(iii) TCF for French Nationality
Suppose you are applying for French nationality. In that case, you have to justify your French level by appearing for the TCF pour l’accès à la nationalité Française.
It is only valid for an application for French nationality by marriage or naturalization.
TCF for French citizenship comprises two compulsory examinations—Listening comprehension and Speaking Expression.
(iv) TCF Canada
If you would like to initiate the process of permanent economic immigration to Canada (outside Quebec), then TCF Canada can help you earn extra points.
TCF Canada comprises four compulsory parts—speaking, writing, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension.
The levels correspond to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). You can earn bonus points only if you gain CLB 7 or more.
(v) TCF for Quebec
Anyone, regardless of nationality or mother tongue, who wishes to apply for permanent residence in one of Canada’s Quebec provinces and take the TCF for Quebec.
The Ministry for Immigration, Diversity, and Inclusion (MIDI) accepts this test.
The approved centers organize the tests throughout the year.
Like all TEF and TCF, it also has a limited validity of two years. You can earn a maximum of 16 points.
The European Language Certificates, or TELC is an international exam to gauge language competency.
The TELC GmbH – Foreign language tests are currently available in 11 lingos, including French, with over 80 different certificates.
The TELC also allows you to choose which area of the test you want to take in European languages.
